Artwork No. 8
“And he has filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, with understanding, with knowledge and with all kinds of skills— to make artistic designs for work in gold, silver and bronze, to cut and set stones, to work in wood and to engage in all kinds of artistic crafts. And he has given both him and Oholiab son of Ahisamak, of the tribe of Dan, the ability to teach others. He has filled them with skill to do all kinds of work as engravers, designers, embroiderers in blue, purple and scarlet yarn and fine linen, and weavers—all of them skilled workers and designers.” Exodus 35:31–35 NIV
After God tells Moses how to build the Tabernacle, Bezalel is identified as the chief artisan as he has been gifted by God in creative work. Together with Oholiab, they teach the others, multiplying excellence throughout the workforce. One of the items Bezalel goes on to design is the curtain for the entrance to the sacred tent which is woven and embroidered with exquisite designs using blue, purple, and scarlet thread. Everyone is given a chance to contribute with offerings and their skills for a higher purpose. Bezalel’s natural capabilities were strengthened by the Spirit’s filing, enabling him to complete his assignment for the Lord’s purpose.
In this painting, we see an abstract design of blue, purple and scarlet reflecting the work of the craftsmen. In these verses, we see how everyday creative skills were valued and how they can be useful for Kingdom impact. Whether you are a man, woman, leader, laborer, artist or organizer, you have a place in God’s project. Identify and develop the skills God has given you, understanding that each talent can be used for His glory. Reflect on how you can contribute your resources and talents to your church or community, following the example of the Israelites.
