“I gave you lovely jewelry, bracelets, beautiful necklaces, a ring for your nose, earrings for your ears, and a lovely crown for your head. And so you were adorned with gold and silver.” Ezekiel 16:11-13a NKJV
In Ezekiel 16:11-13a, God uses the prophet Ezekiel to tell a parable about the city of Jerusalem’s sins. Jerusalem is personified as an abandoned child whom God finds, nurtures to maturity, and adorns with beauty and splendor signifying His blessings and provision. The city represents the people of Israel and their covenant with God represents His commitment and blessings. The later verses in the chapter outline her unfaithfulness, emphasizing that sin leads to destruction, but despite the harsh judgment, God promises restoration and an everlasting covenant, showcasing His unfailing love and mercy.
In this painting, the focus is not on her beauty but on her jewelry adornment. She has received many blessings throughout her life because she understands the importance of maintaining a faithful relationship with God, the Master Jeweler, and follows His commandments. She has not been unfaithful, turning her back on God, giving in to her own desires and what the world says is good. Reflect on your life and identify the idols, anything you put before God, which are distractions, lead you away from God and need to be removed.
